TW - painter in acrylic and oil
Potteries born Terry Woolliscroft enjoyed an entire career in the ceramics industry. He now paints in his studio in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
He paints in acrylics and oils, and having no traditional art schooling, is mainly self-taught. He enjoys painting landscapes, seascapes and still lifes and adapts his style according to the subject and his mood. He aims to capture an essence rather than a literal interpretation of his subjects and enjoys not just the colour but the textural quality of the paint. His finished paintings are almost always framed and always without glazing so that the colours and textures can be full appreciated.
His paintings have found new homes here in the UK and as far afield as Japan, New Zealand, Arizona and Washington.
He draws inspiration from the rather special landscape of the north Staffordshire Potteries, and is influenced by Stoke artists Maurice Wade, Jack Clarkson, and Reginald G Haggar. He loves the work of Jiri Borsky, Rob Pointon and Ian Pearsall. More widely he loves the painting style and teaching of Hashim Akib and Marie Antoniou.
His work can be seen online, in his Etsy shop, and in local galleries.
In 2018, he was privileged to have a solo show at The Foxlowe Art Centre, Leek, and was selected for the Three Counties Open Art Exhibition, Burslem, in 2019.
He is the creator and administrator of The Bottle Oven Art Club which was established in May 2020 as a one-off online exhibition of 50 selected artworks celebrating the culture and heritage of the bottle ovens and kilns of the Potteries.
In May 2021 Terry was shortlisted for the Museums and Heritage Award 2021 (nominated by Gladstone Pottery Museum) for his voluntary work in establishing the Art Club during the pandemic lockdown of 2020.
He runs a number of websites, some dedicated to the Potteries Bottle Oven:
